Community Services
For 100 years Seamen’s has been a gathering place for the Newport community and visitors.
The community is invited to enjoy Seamen’s lovely spaces: the cozy Henry J. Anderson Maritime Library, historic Chapel of the Sea and peaceful Memorial Garden.
Community Meals
Seamen’s hosts a monthly evening meal on the 3rd Wednesday of each month as well as a special Thanksgiving Day Dinner and Christmas Day brunch. These meals are free and open to the public.
The Community Meal program is sponsored by BankNewport for our Centennial Year. Thank you BankNewport!
Warming Centers
Seamen’s opens as an Emergency Overnight Warming Center on winter nights when the temperatures drop below approximately 20 degrees and spending the night outside becomes extremely dangerous to the homeless or area residents who need shelter. The Warming Center’s, which run from 4pm-7am, are staffed by volunteers. While guests are at the warming centers, they have access to free hot showers and free laundry. During the warming centers, Seamen’s provides a hot dinner, snacks, hot breakfast and beverages. We also provide warm wintercoats, hats, gloves, warm socks, disposable hand/foot warmers and backpacks. For most of us, a warm coat and accessories can last a few years, but for the homeless these items often become disposable, as when coats/hats/gloves become heavy and wet from snow and rain, the homeless often don’t have a way to dry or carry the items and they are discarded. In 2018, over 11 nights of warming centers, we had 145 warming center clients, provided 375 cups of coffee, 225 dinners, 145 breakfasts, 120 Hand Warmers, 82 showers, 74 winter coats and 42 loads of laundry.
