Seamen’s Church Institute of Newport is hiring a full time Director of Finance, Human Resources & Operations. Located on Bowen’s Wharf, Seamen’s is a 100-year-old non-profit whose mission is “to protect, preserve and enhance the maritime culture of Newport and Narragansett Bay by providing education, hospitality and safe haven for those who work, live and play on or by the sea.” This position is an integral part of the organization and requires someone with the ability to balance a multi-faceted organization with varied revenue streams.


Job responsibilities


  • Oversee & organize the annual audit/taxes/financial statements and serve as primary liaison with the independent auditors/accountants, including oversight of 990 preparation
  • Analyze and create internal control policies, implement and enforce financial policies
  • Analyze costs, budgets, and other financial data to prepare financial reports and recommend cost saving measures
  • Ongoing assessment of performance by business segment against budgets
  • Grant management, proper allocation of and use of grant funds and grant reports
  • Manage organizational cash flow and forecasting
  • Lead annual budgeting and planning process (with Executive Director and Board Treasurer)
  • Bookkeeping Functions (Quickbooks); Enter donations, revenues, expenses, pay bills
  • Ordering; research prices and order supplies/equipment
  • Work with Board Treasurer to prepare bi-monthly board reports



  • Create/maintain employee work schedules
  • Continuous evaluation and improvement of HR policies and offerings
  • Recruiting; job postings, resume reviewing, interviews, reference checking, research candidates, offer letters
  • When appropriate: performance evaluations, hiring, firing, warnings
  • Track paid time off
  • Mediate employee issues



  • Call appropriate vendors for equipment repair and maintenance, negotiates fair pricing and ensures proper completion of work
  • Oversee daily and long-term maintenance, repairs and capital projects
  • Maintain external vendor relationships, solicit and evaluate financial and operational proposals and contracts.
  • Train, schedule and supervise facility cleaning and maintenance staff
  • Negotiate and manage lessee relationships
  • Serve as contact for all insurance matters; solicit quotes, maintain records, file claims, maintain relationship with insurance agents.
  • Work closely with Board House Committee



Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Excellent math skills
  • Attention to detail and a high degree of accuracy
  • Strong knowledge of generally accepted accounting principles
  • Proficient with Quickbooks
  • Strong computer skills including the ability to create and maintain complicated spreadsheets
  • Financial analysis and problem-solving skills
  • Excellent interpersonal communication skills, works well with others, possesses patience, diplomacy, and tolerance
  • Positive values of integrity, accountability, reliability, and teamwork required
  • Exceptional ability to organize and prioritize workload and duties, exercise professional judgment, identify and solve problems timely, and adapt to changing conditions



B.S. Accounting degree

5+ years’ experience in non-profit accounting showing a progression of increased responsibility

Salary 65-70k and is commensurate with experience. Benefits include paid vacation and holidays, sick time and annual raises.
