Seamen’s Basic Needs Program hosts monthly evening community meals and special Thanksgiving and Christmas Day meals. During the winter months, Seamen’s serves as the only emergency overnight warming center in the state. This past winter, over 55 people were sheltered during 11 dangerously cold evenings.
Patrons have access to a clothing closet, laundry facilities, showers, and personal hygiene products. In addition, the Executive Director administers an outside fund providing approximately $100,000 in financial assistance annually to Newport residents. Non-Newport residents are assisted through Seamen’s own financial assistance program that provides funds for rental and utility assistance and gear for commercial fishermen. In 2017, over 300 Newport County residents were helped through the Basic Needs program.
