As of April 1st, Tracey McNeal was appointed as our new Cafe Manager and she already has some great ideas to make our busy summer season a success.

Welcome back, Tracey McNeal!

Tracey is a familiar face to many Cafe regulars because she was the cook at the Cafe before we closed for construction in early 2010. Her daily specials, wrap sandwiches, special chicken salad, and great laugh were always a big hit around here. So, we’re delighted to have her back and “in charge”! There will be a new menu to focus on those items that are the most popular as well as some new ones; there will be new Cafe wait staff; there will dining in our Memorial Garden this summer; and most importantly, a new group of Ambassadors for the Seamen’s Church Institute!

We’ve already started to send out our weekly Aloha Cafe specials email blast, so if you’re not on our email list, please sign up so you don’t miss any of the goings-on around here for the next few busy months!

Updated March 4, 2012 – TICKETS ARE STILL AVAILABLE!

Seamen’s Church Institute is very pleased to present a special concert by Agustin & Carol Anievas on Sunday, March 11, 2012 from 3:00 to 5:00 pm at St. George’s School Chapel in Middletown. The concert will benefit the creation of an endowment for the preservation and maintenance of the Chapel of the Sea at Seamen’s.

The program will include works by Bach-Busoni, Chopin and the Rachmaninoff Concerto No.2 in C Minor for two pianos, featuring Carol Anievas at the second piano.

Our Guest Performers:

Agustin Anievas began his studies with his mother before his fourth birthday. By the time he was twelve, he had already performed at the Pan American Union in Washington, D.C. and the Palacio de Bellas Artes where he was the youngest artist to be given that honor. His orchestral debut at eighteen with the Little Orchestra Society in New York’s Carnegie Hall began an already auspicious career, and he went on to garner many prizes and competitions as a young artist. Performing in the musical centers of the US, as well as on most of the continents and in many countries, Agustin has appeared in recitals and with orchestras worldwide. Now retired from his position as Professor of Piano at Brooklyn College’s Conservatory of Music, Mr. Anievas has been a long time Newport Festival artist. He first appeared at the invitation of the indomitable Mark P. Malkovich Sr. in the 1970′s and will appear again this summer playing works by Beethoven, Brahms, and Chopin. This afternoon’s program has the delightful addition of his wife, Carol, who will accompany him at the second piano playing the orchestral part of the Rachmaninoff Concert No.2.

Seamen’s Church Institute very much appreciates the warm hospitality of St. George’s School for allowing us to host this afternoon concert in the magnificant Chapel on their campus in Middletown.

Tickets are $50 per person and can be purchased online (below) through PayPal – at the door on the day of the concert – by calling Seamen’s Church Institute at 401-847-4260 – or by contacting Deedra Durocher at seamensnewport@gmail.com.

Please note – actual tickets will not be printed, but a table for advance reservations or door sales will be at the concert entrance.

Thanksgiving came to Seamen’s in a variety of ways:

Once again, Seamen’s hosted a Community Thanksgiving Dinner from 12:00 to 2:00 pm on Thanksgiving Day, with the assistance of an enthusiastic army of volunteers. With the experienced volunteer guidance of caterer and restauranteur Kim Comfort, preparations began on Tuesday evening with vegetable peeling and ran through late afternoon on Thursday for clean up. Approximately 257 guests were served in the Mariner’s Lounge as well as in the Library, some 117 more than last year! We were so grateful to receive donations of volunteer time; borrowed buffet servers; discounts for rented items; homemade cranberry sauce, breads, pies and other desserts; beautiful floral centerpieces for every table; and financial contributions.
