Giving To SCI
I have found that among its other benefits, giving liberates the soul of the giver. Maya Angelou
Seamen’s Church Institute was formed in 1919, and now – 94 years later, Seamen’s continues to offer services and support to those working on the waterfront and to those in need from our community. In 1930, Edith and Maude Wetmore donated the construction of a building at 18 Market Square to Seamen’s in honor of their industrialist-era parents, Rhode Island Senator (and former Governor) Mr. and Mrs. George Peobody Wetmore. This prominent building on Newport’s waterfront proved ideal for Seamen’s purposes in 1930 and continues critical to the mission to be misssion critical today providing convenient access to programs and services for the general public, at-risk populations, visiting and local mariners, and waterfront workers.
Seamen’s Church Institute’s mission is ‘to provide men and women of the sea, and persons referred from the Newport community, a safe haven in which they may find comfort, aid and benefit.” The organization is a small, flexible and well-managed human services agency that makes a significant impact on those served by its mission and programs. In 2012, 5,121 meals were given through in house and delivery programs such as Soup to the Docks which delivers soup directly to the fishing docks in Newport and the Port of Galilee; 287 families were given gift cards to purchase food for their families; $17,800 was spent on basic human needs for prescriptions, clothing, shoes, transportation etc. Another $5,600 was spent on emergency housing in addition to the transitional housing offered on site at our facility. Seamen’s also provides a safe haven for over 15,000 people seeking support meetings. In addition to these extraordinary services, Seamen’s provides showers, laundry assistance, heating assistance and so much more with a quiet dignity and respect for each individual seeking assitance.
